Shichons
(Pet Guide) Fast Facts
The Shichon gives you the small size of the Shih Tzu and the friendly disposition of the Bichon Frise. Origin The origins of the Shichon breed cannot be traced back to any one breeder because the crossing of purebred dogs is a fairly common practice. It is known, however, that the Shichon breed has grown in popularity in the United States during the last decade. The Shichon is a cross between the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu, so its origins are a combination of the origins of these breeds. The Bichon Frise is descended from the Barbet and the Standard Poodle, having been developed as early as the 1300s in France. The first Bichon Frise was brought to the United States in 1955 and the breed was recognized by the AKC in 1972. The Shih Tzu is widely recognized as one of the oldest breeds of dog with its origins dating back to ancient China. There are many theories related to the origins of the breed – some suggest that it is a cross between the Pekingese and the Lhasa Apso. Though Shih Tzu dogs have been in existence since 800BC, the first breed standard wasn’t written by the UKC until 1935 and the breed wasn’t recognized by the AKC until 1969. Currently, the Shichon is not recognized by the AKC as a separate breed and it is unlikely to be since the AKC considers it a hybrid of two existing breeds rather than a separate breed. Pedigree The Shichon is a 50/50 hybrid of the Brichon Frise and the Shih Tzu. Depending on breeding, it is possible for Shichons to have more or less of one breed than the other and still be considered a Shichon. Food/Diet Because the Shichon is a small-breed dog, you should plan to use a dog food formulated for small breeds. These dog foods are designed to meet the high energy needs of small-breed dogs. As is true with many small dogs, Shichons are prone to obesity so avoid overfeeding. The Shichon dog breed is intelligent and has the capacity to do well with training. Training The Shichon dog breed is intelligent and has the capacity to do well with training. Unfortunately, like many small breeds, these dogs are a little tricky to train – especially when it comes to housebreaking. The key to training these dogs is to start early when the puppy is still young and to maintain a firm and consistent hand in training. It is important to maintain your patience when training as these dogs do not respond well to anger. As long as you are consistent and reward your Shichon for good behavior, you shouldn’t have too much trouble with training. Socialization is also important, particularly when the dog is still young, to make sure he remains friendly around strangers and other dogs. Weight The average weight of the Shichon breed is between 10 and 15 lbs. Temperament/Behavior The Shichon is a friendly and affectionate little dog that loves to be around family. These dogs are generally good with kids, though you need to be sure that your children know how to handle a small dog properly. Shichon dogs are lively and they love to play which makes them a great choice for active families or families with older children. These dogs form strong bonds with their family members and they tend to get along well with other dogs and household pets. Common Health Problems For the most part, the Shichon is a fairly healthy breed but it is prone to certain health problems. The health problems seen in Shichon dogs are a combination of those seen in the parent breeds, Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu. Some common health problems affecting Shichon dogs include cataracts, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, respiratory problems, and portosystemic shunt. Life Expectancy The average life expectancy of the Shichon breed is between 15 and 18 years. Exercise Requirements The Shichon is not an overly active breed but it does require a daily walk to work off its energy. These dogs love to play and active games like fetch can fulfill the breed’s daily exercise requirements. Providing your Shichon with mental and physical stimulation will help to prevent the development of unwanted behaviors. The Shichon is a friendly and affectionate little dog that loves to be around family. AKC The Shichon dog breed is not currently recognized by the AKC or the UKC because it is considered a hybrid of two purebred dogs rather than a separate breed. The Shichon is, however, recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR). Coat The Shichon is often referred to as the “teddy bear dog” due to its cuddly nature and soft, fluffy coat. The coat color and appearance of this breed varies slightly depending on breeding but, for the most part, the Shichon has a long, silky coat that may also be curly. As well, they are hypoallergenic. Coat colors may include gray, silver, cream, tan, apricot, red black, chocolate, or any combination of these colors. Puppies Shichon puppies look like little bundles of fluff – they are small and cuddly, just like a teddy bear. The average litter size for Shichons is usually between four and five. About the Shichon Dog Breed By Nikki Fiedler, eHow Contributor The shichon, otherwise known as a zuchon, is not a purebred dog but rather a mix of two purebreds. The breed is a cross between the bichon frise and the shih tzu. This type of dog has not been bred extensively but is becoming popular because of its teddy bear appearance and friendly disposition. Appearance Shichons may not be an exact 50 percent purebred to 50 percent purebred cross, as it can be common for breeders to breed multigeneration crosses. The Shichon hair is typically more loosely curled than the Bichon Frise's tightly curled hair. Shichons have a double coat that includes an outer coat of loosely curled and fluffy hair and an undercoat of fine, soft hair. The hair length is 3 to 4 in. long. It can have either a white coat like the Bichon Frise or colors similar to that of a Shih Tzu, with a mixture of black and white, light brown or gray. A female Shichon ranges from 9 to 11 in. tall, while a male dog can be a bit taller. The average weight of a Shichon ranges from 7 to 14 lbs. Temperament Shichons have a friendly temperament and are intelligent, energetic and loving companions. For these reasons, the animal can be good for families with children. This breed of dog is sociable and eager to please. Shichons grow attached to their families and do not fare well when separated from their family for a lengthy amount of time. They can be very adaptive with other pets in the family, and this dog is easy to train. Shichons enjoy attention and like to play. They are also highly alert and can act as a watchdog. Because of its relatively small size, the Shichon can be a good indoor pet, but it also will enjoy walks outside. General Health and Maintenance The Shichon has been bred to be hypoallergenic and non-shedding, so it is ideal for family members with allergies. Like many hybrids, the Shichon often has a longer lifespan than its parents and can outlive the parent breeds. The average lifespan of a Shichon is 15 years or longer. Not a lot of maintenance is required for a Shichon. The dog will mostly exercise on its own. To keep the coat healthy and clean, regular bathing and brushing are required. Breed Advantages Purebreds often have genetic disorders, which are caused by generations of inbreeding. The Shichon's parent, the Bichon Frise, usually has skin allergies. The Shichon's other parent, the Shih Tzu, will most likely have breathing and eye problems. It is possible that the Shichon can inherit these parent traits, but more often than not it will be free of them. Since the Shichon has a longer nose than the ShihTzu, it will be less likely to inherit any breathing problems. The Shichon inherits tear ducts from the Bichon Frise parent, which reduces the dog's chance of having eye complications. However, that being said, there is always the possibility that your pet can have progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), ear infections, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, renal dysplasia, abnormal thyroid functioning or hypersensitivity. Living Environment An indoor environment with a family is best for the Shichon. Having a small home base for the dog is good, as its small, short legs will often tire after outdoor playtime. The Shichon can live comfortably in an apartment setting since it is small and not very vocal. Because the Shichon craves attention and a family setting, it is not well suited to empty homes or for busy people that travel, since the dog does not do well when left alone. (Tiny Teddy Bears)

Their fur comes in a variety of looks like straight and silky, to wavy, super plush and curly patterns. Learning Rate: They have a high learning rate as they inherit the high intelligence of the Bichon Frise. This means enjoyable puppy days and easy puppy rearing as they catch on quick to all that they are taught. Weight: Our Zuchon's range from 5-15 pounds. Exercise: Minimal exercise is needed, they are well suited to be an indoor dog, but also enjoys outdoor activity's such as walks as well. They can adapt to long outdoor walks and playtime, but can easily be satisfied with indoor living as well. Hybrid vigor: Hybrid vigor is a term describing the breeding of a genetically superior offspring by combining the benefits and not the disadvantages of the originating breed(s)(the Shih-Tzu & the Bichon). All cross-bred animals are not necessarily superior to their originating breed(s), but happily the Zuchon hybrid is superior to both the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu. Purebreds: Purebreds commonly have genetic disorders, disadvantages caused by years of inbreeding. The Bichon Frise has been bred since the 14th century in Spain and was a cross between a Barbet Water Spaniel and a Poodle. The Shih-Tzu comes from China and is known to date back at least to the sixteenth century. Cross-breeding the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu results in the Zuchon, which has less chance of inheriting the genetic disadvantages of either originating breed. The Bichon Frise will commonly have skin allergies while the Shih Tzu commonly has breathing problems and eye problems. While it is possible for the Zuchon to inherit any mix of these traits, it is more likely to suffer from none of these traits. The Zuchon is less likely to have skin allergies than the Bichon Frise. Because the Zuchon inherits a longer nose than the Shih Tzu it is less likely to have breathing problems, and since the Zuchon inherits tear ducts from the Bichon Frise that the Shih Tzu does not have, the Zuchon has a reduced chance of having eye problems.
